Solving our biggest problem

In her book, Total Truth, Christian apologist Nancy Pearcey wrote, “At some point, these temporal things (earning a degree, getting a job) fail to fulfill the deeper hunger for eternity in the human spirit…Our hearts are restless…until we find our rest in Him.” While it is true that we were made to be creative and “do something” with our God-given abilities, all the achievements we make fail to satisfy a spiritual need within us. When sin entered the world, death entered the world, for God said, “When you eat of it you will surely die” (Genesis 2:17). Humans’ greatest need was not more food, possessions, or achievements, but life—eternal life that only God could grant!

To cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness, God killed an animal and made clothes for them as recorded in Genesis 3:21, “The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.” But to cover our sinfulness, God killed His Son Jesus and made “clothes” for us as recorded in Isaiah 61:10, “I delight greatly in the LORD; my soul rejoices in my God. For he has clothed me with garments of salvation and arrayed me in a robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom adorns his head like a priest, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.” By trusting in Jesus’ perfect life and sacrificial death, He covers you with a “garment of salvation and robe of righteousness” so that you may enter heaven without any sin. Just as God gave Adam and Eve the garments, so He gives us the “garment of faith” today—He does all the work, while we don’t do anything to save ourselves. The apostle Paul speaks about this in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.”
