Solar activity and temperature

God has promised that seasons will continue until Judgment Day, the day Jesus returns. Genesis 8:22 says, “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.”  On the other hand, some scientists believe that greenhouse gases are causing the Earth to increase in temperature which will lead to catastrophes.

Greenhouse gas theory states that man-made gases are changing the Earth’s temperature. Carbon dioxide from emissions due to human activity are blamed for raising the planet’s thermometer because the CO2 is helping trap heat in the atmosphere. Like a greenhouse keeps plants warm due to trapped heat from the sun, the CO2 is creating a blanket that will raise the Earth’s temperature. Therefore, greenhouse gas theory predicts an increase in the frequency of record-breaking temperatures. However, that is not what we observe. The opposite is happening—there is a decrease in record-breaking temperatures. (See the earlier blog for details on this.)

On the other hand, examining the relationship between solar activity (namely sunpsots) and temperature gives a clearer explanation on why the Earth’s overall temperature fluctuates. The sun experiences cycles of many and fewer sunspots. As the sunspot cycle length decreases, temperature increases on Earth. The “brighter” sun leads to more radiation and less cloud cover, so the planet is warmer.

This chart shows temperatures in the northern hemisphere:
