Let’s wrap up this month’s focus on ethics. As Christians, we believe that God exists and He has declared what is right and wrong through the Bible. These moral absolutes are for all people everywhere.
Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. ” This verse shows that God made us to do good right from the start. We are created to follow God’s will by the Holy Spirit who is indwelling all Christians. Yet how do we know what is good?
Colossians 2:3 says that in Christ are “all the treasures of wisdom & knowledge.” If we want to know what’s good, we need to read the Bible. When we read God’s word, we can gain wisdom to discern what is right and what is wrong.
Wisdom can be defined as making the right choice at the right time. In other words, we live in line with God’s design. If we go against God’s design, there will be consequences, just as using a laptop as a frisbee will lead to the destruction of the computer.
That’s why God inspired King Solomon and others to write a book on wise choices: the book of Proverbs. Chapter 1 starts like this: “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair…The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction (Pr 1:1-3, 7).
Would you like to know what is “right and just and fair”? Try reading one chapter of Proverbs every day for a month. After reading the 31 chapters, you’ll be wiser–and more ethical!
