Preparing for a Post-Christian Culture (Part 2)

There are certain attributes of American culture today that we must understand in order to effectively witness.  First, it is Post-Modern, meaning that there is no Truth for all people, just your individual truth or your group’s truth.  An example of this is the abortion issue.  If a woman is pregnant and wants the baby, there are two humans present.  If another pregnant woman does not want the baby, she aborts the “tissue” since it wasn’t alive.  There is no Truth for both women–that they are both carrying a child.  There is simply what the individual wants to believe.  The individual creates truth and reality.

A second characteristic is that our culture is highly individualistic.  The gender issue is an example of this.  According to the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (May, 2013), Gender Identity Disorder is very rare.  In males, this occurs in .005% to .014% of the population, meaning there are 5-14 cases for every 100,000 males.  In females, the rate is .002% to .003% (2-3 cases for every 100,000 females).  However, even though there is a small number of people dealing with this issue, states are allowing anyone to use any bathroom or locker-room that they choose.  The individual’s desire trumps the rest of society.

A third characteristic is that the culture is highly relativistic, with no moral absolutes.  Who is to say what is right and wrong?  Since I create truth and reality as an individual, and since life is all about me, I determine what is permissible and what is not.  There is no God (an assumption that Post-Modernism begins with), so there is no ultimate authority to tell me what is allowed.  I decide for myself.

As we understand some of the driving forces of our day and age, we can see where the culture is headed and what we should do.  More on that next.
